I hear you need guidance.

You subscribed to a magazine only to find out that only 3% of their content is about style. You visit blogs and all you find are boring stories about how the blogger found his favorite shoes at a discount store or what type of burger he had to eat that day. Well, you've come to the right place. I am to be a definite guide to the technique of Men's Style and the Art of Being a Modern Gentleman.

Your focus must be on :

  • Fitting
  •  Layering
  • Color Coordination
  • Trendiness + Individuality
  • Accessorizing + Detailing.

Today we will focus on the first 4, I will go deep into Accessorizing + Detailing on the next post.

MENSWEAR

You know this: There's only so much you can do with a shirt and a pair of pants, and unlike women, you don't have an infinite array of accessories to spice it up, and even if you did, you don't want to go there. Trust me.

But there's a solution. You can accomplish the same with layers.

There are three things to keep in mind to pull layers off. Color: layers should be of different colors, but well coordinated. Fit: the layers should be thin so they don't make you look bulky. And, Visibility: every layer should be visible.

Game on.

THE FIT

It helps us men keep it simple.

And, while I honestly believe that every man should be an expert when it comes to men's style, if you put a gun to my head to get the minimum you can do to look great, this is what I would tell you: You have to wear clothes that fit you. And that goes way beyond grabbing the right size from the store's rack, fit is unique to every man, so 80 percent of the time, anything you buy ready-to-wear should go straight to your tailor. Period!

The reason is very simple: Fit can make ANY outfit look dapper.

That's a fact.

COLORS

#4 : Your outfit need colors.

But not just any colors, colors that work well together. Colors that take an ordinary outfit and make it extraordinary. Use neutral colors in a range of shades from light to dark these include: black, white, gray,  brown and beige. They are sometimes called “earth tones.”

Find and save pictures of outfits that you think have remarkable color combinations and use them as guide when you put together an outfit.

You've got to fake it 'til you make it.

TRENDINESS

So

Your clothes are tailored, you know how to accessorize, details are your best friends, you layer like it's nobody's business, and mixing colors comes like second nature to you, but what's next?

Well, here's a hint: You gotta keep up with the times. (OK, that wasn't a hint, but if you read the title, you didn't need one.)

Here's what you need to remember when it comes to trends: be very skeptical, you want to look at your pictures 10 years from now and feel proud of the way you look. Take from trends only what suits you and barely enough to make keep your outfits fresh.

This is what I call "The Preppy concept". You want to always look Fresh. Effortless. Timeless.  (Ill go into this on another post)

INDIVIDUALITY

Maybe I'm shooting in the dark here. But Im guessing you like who you are: Your killer smile, the physique you've developed, even that unruly patch of hair.

So chances are, when it comes to your wardrobe, you want to keep your individuality. And you should. But here's the trick, in order to express your individuality you must first rule the other six principles of men's style.

Yes, individuality, like anything else worth having, must be earned.

Keep it up!  - Theo
